Let's get this ball rolling
  • Someone needs to post something Aperture related to get things rolling. Let me start with this...

Back in June I discovered a blog entry that gave lots of inside into the inner workings of Aperture brushes.
    http://johnpurlia.wordpress.com/2011/06/06/and-now-a-short-venture-into-technology-—-aperture-brushes-unmasked/

I used John's technique to create a texture preset just to see if it would work.

Yeah, it wasn't a good preset... I was more interested in getting the technique down and documented than I was with the finished results. Anyone else played with this kind of thing in Aperture?
  • I've done this a few times. It's how I created the vignettes that I have as presets on the blog. The only problems is if you do complex textures with this technique it can Slow Aperture down. I tried to create grain with it once but it caused it to crash

The other problem is, if you're creating presets, that brush maps don't scale - so if you create one for a 12mp camera and then go to apply it to a 16mp image you're left with borders.
  • The coverage of the inner workings of Aperture brushes was very interesting.  While I may not use the information myself, it was nice to better understand how the TIFF files are saved.  I had no idea!! Thank you.

  • Interesting blog on the inner workings of brushes.  I sure hope the next version of Aperture includes a mask option - should be easy enough.
